  • Felix the Cat is a feline cartoon character, visually based (in part) on Charlie Chaplin. The character debuted in 1919 as Master Tom in Feline Follies. By 1922, Felix was a massively popular pop culture icon and remains a symbol of Americana today. An animated star with a distinct personality, Felix is considered the progenitor to other early animated idols, such as Disney's Mickey Mouse, Looney Toons' Bosko, and all that have come since. The origin of Felix has been in dispute: although he is billed as the creation of producer Pat Sullivan, some researches have contended that Felix was conceived by Sullivan's production manager, Otto Messmer. A 1991 book by John Canemaker, Felix: The Twisted Tale of the World's Most Famous Cat, chronicles Felix's history and disputed origins.
