Feline distemper, also known as panleukopenia, is a highly contagious viral disease in cats, kittens and raccoons. Feline distemper invades cells found in the digestive system, bone marrow, lymph tissue, and nervous system.
Feline distempter can be prevented by vaccinating your cat with an annual panleukopenia vaccine.
Symptoms
- Diarrhea
- Dehydration
- Vomiting
- Loss of electrolytes
- Low white blood cell count
- Seizures
Treatment
- Broad-spectrum antibiotics such as amoxycillin, clavulanic acid or cephalosporin can be used.
- Subcutaneous or intravenous fluids
- Whole blood (if necessary)
- Metoclopromide (to reduce fluid loss)
- Low doses of diazepam to stimulate appetite
- Home care is best to reduce stress on the animal
