Today, February 1, is the 32nd day of the year on the Gregorian Calendar. The Zodiac sign for individuals born on this day is Aquarius. On this day in 2004, Janet Jackson had her infamous wardrobe malfunction at the 38th Super Bowl halftime show, in 2003 the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart upon re-entry, and in 1790 the US Supreme Court held its first session.http://www.bigbtv.com/RealityTV/RealityTV/Superbowl/JanetJacksonJustinTimberlake.html http://www.answers.com/topic/monday-february-1-2010-from-today-s-highlights-archive
In the United States, Black History month begins today. The beginnings of Black History Month span back to 1915 when the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) was established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson and Rev. Jesse E. Moorland. Their goal was to research and bring to light the contributions of people who are black to American and world history. Through the years the observance was first a week long, but in 1976 it was expanded to Black History month.
This is National Baked Alaska Day. It is unclear when this day was established as an observance, but the dessert itself first appeared in print in The Original Fannie Farmer 1896 Cookbook by Fannie Farmer. Baked Alaska is made by layering ice cream with sponge cake, covering with meringue and baking until lightly browned.
