Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a 1998 film based on the book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson. Although largely a box office failure, having earned only $10.6 million of its $18.5 million budget in ticket sales and receiving mainly negative reviews, the film experienced substantial DVD sales and remains a cult classic.

Starring Johnny Depp as Thompson's alter ego Raoul Duke and Benicio Del Toro as his Samoan lawyer, Dr. Gonzo, the story is a semi-fictionalized account of two trips Thompson made to Las Vegas in 1971.

  • Plot

Hired to cover the Mint 400 motorcycle race for a sports magazine, Duke and Gonzo set off on a drug-crazed binge from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. Upon their arrival in Sin City, the pair wreak havoc on the city, trashing hotel rooms, committing fraud and ingesting ridiculous amounts of alcohol and drugs in their search for the American dream.
  • Raoul Duke Quotes

    1. "We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a saltshaker half-full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, laughers, screamers... Also, a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether, and two dozen amyls."
    2. "There was madness in any direction, at any hour. You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning."
