On March 14, 2009, President Obama announced that Margaret Hamburg would be the new head of the FDA, and Dr. Joshua Sharfstein as the Principal Deputy Commissioner. He also announced major changes, reorganizing the agency. Several peanut butter products were recalled in January 2009 after an outbreak of salmonella was thought to be linked to peanut butter.
