Fayetteville State University is a member of the University of North Carolina system and offers bachelor's and master's degrees and one doctoral in educational leadership. The school is part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
History
In 1867, seven black men, Matthew N. Leary, Andrew J. Chesnutt, Robert Simmons, George Grainger, Thomas Lomax, Nelson Carter and David A. Bryant, founded the Howard School. The institution was to be a site for the education of African-American students. In 1877, the North Carolina General Assembly designated the school for teacher training and changed the name to the State Colored Normal School. In 1969, the school acquired the name Fayetteville State University and in 1972, it became part of the University of North Carolina system.University of North Carolina Archives: History
