Father's Day

Father's Day is an annual holiday that celebrates fathers, grandfathers, and all things associated with fatherhood. Father's Day typically includes gift-giving and dinners in honor of fathers. The day is a day where fathers usually spend time with their children and families. In addition to gifts, it is customary for Father's Day cards to be given to the recipient on this day.

History

The first Father's Day celebration took place in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. The celebration was inspired by a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd, who wished to honor her single-parent father who raised his six children alone. She felt that fathers also deserved a special day after listening to a sermon on Mother's Day. In 1924, president Coolidge recommended that Father's Day be a national holiday when he stated that it would, "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations." However, it was not until 1966 that a president, Lyndon Johnson, declared that Father's Day was to be celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Furthermore, it was not made an official holiday until 1972, by Richard Nixon. In recent years, the holiday has become increasingly commercialized in the United States.
