Fast, Cheap and Out of Control is a 1997 documentary by filmmaker Errol Morris. The film profiles four men with seemingly unrelated careers: a robot scientist, a lion trainer, a mole rat expert, and a topiary sculptor. The film won an Independent Spirit award and Best Documentary awards from the National Board of Review and the Society of Texas Film Critics.
Plot Synopsis
Fast, Cheap & Out of Control is an innovative, yet humorous, documentary that centers around four eccentric men and their stories. First, there is Dave Hoover, the lion tamer who offers the audience insight into wild animal thought processes. Next, we have topiary gardener George Mendonca who trims hedges to create giraffes, lions, and other animals, and Ray Mendez who is a mole-rat expert. Finally, we meet Rodney Brooks who is a robot scientist. Morris brilliantly connects these four men thematically. Hoover and Mendonca provide insight into the fading American landscape, Mendez and Brooks look toward the future.
