The 18 Faroe Islands have been a self-governing province of Denmark since 1948. They are located north-west of Scotland, mid-way between Iceland and Norway. With 1100 miles of coastline, one is never farther than three miles from the ocean on the Faroes.FaroeIslands.com: Facts About the Faroes
St. Olaf's Day
King Olav the Holy, who was killed in the battle of Stiklestad on July 29, 1030, is the patron saint of Norway. Norway held control of the Faroes until the 14th century, when Danish influence was introduced as a result of the Kalmar Union in 1380. Although the islands are now a Danish province, Norway's patron saint is still celebrated with festivals, parades and sporting events on July 29.FaroeIslands.com: St. Olav's Day and the Summer Festivals
