March 4, 2008: Colombian Vice-President Francisco Santos claimed that FARC, the Colombian communist rebel group, intended to build a 'dirty bomb'. Santos did not offer any evidence to support the claim. The claim added another layer to the diplomatic crisis that engulfed Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia in early March 2008. The crisis developed after a controversial Colombian cross-border military raid on a FARC base 1 mile inside Ecuador's territory on March 1, 2008. Colombia says that laptop computers recovered from the FARC rebel camp inside Ecuador suggest that both Chavez and Correa were cooperating with FARC. The US and European Union have labeled FARC a terrorist organization.
