When starting a new Far Cry 2 game, the player can choose from 9 male characters, each with his own backstory and physical characteristics.
The Characters

There are 12 characters in Far Cry 2, nine males and 3 females. At the beginning of the game, the player can choose one of the male characters to play. The remaining characters become "buddies", who are placed randomly in the world as NPCs.
When encountered during the course of the game, the buddies are usually in need of rescue or assistance of some sort. If the player chooses to help them, buddies may later offer sidequests or provide additional mission information. It's up to the player's discretion to form a relationship with buddies or let them die or ignore them completely.
