Fantasia

  • Fantasia, released in 1940, is the The Walt Disney Company's third animated film. It features eight classical music pieces recorded by the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski. The film, which has no dialog, is considered an experiment in the interactions between animation and music. The artwork varies from scenes of literalism to total abstraction in response to the mood and pace of the music. The film was originally distributed by the Disney Company itself, presented as a two-hour traveling road show. The show was largely unsuccessful and a year later Disney was forced to release the film through an independent distribution company, which edited the movie to 81 minutes long. Since then, the original two hour film with accompanying original soundtrack has never been fully restored. However, a 2000 release came as close as is thought to be possible, missing only 10 minutes of original footage, now considered to be lost. In 2000, a sequel to Fantasia, called Fantasia 2000 was also released.
