This is Part 19 of our complete Fallout 3 Walkthrough, featuring Fallout 3 Wasteland Secrets and Fallout 3 Characters and Sidequests.
-
Wasteland Secrets
- These are a few of the secrets and miniquests that aren't considered sidequests by the game, but still are worth checking out for some sweet rewards.
Dogmeat
- A little bit southwest of the Minefield is a location known as Scrapyard. Explore this area and you'll eventually come across a couple of raiders harassing a dog.
- You don't have to worry about killing the raiders. The dog usually manages to take them out before you even arrive.
- Talk to the dog and infer that it's master just got killed. You'll be given an opportunity to ask if he would like to come with you, to which Dogmeat excitedly barks in approval.
- From then on, he's your loyal companion until the day he or you dies. Yes, Dogmeat can die and if he does, you'll lose him forever.
- Thankfully you can heal him to full health with stimpacks by talking to him even in the middle of a firefight.
- You can also tell Dogmeat to go search for items, wait where he stands, or wait over at Vault 101.
- NOTE: Dogmeat does not count as a follower. You are allowed to have one follower and Dogmeat to form a party of 3.
Followers
- There are a total of seven permanent followers in the game. You are only able to have one follower + Dogmeat in your party at one time.
- Star Paladin Cross: Only obtainable with Good Karma. Found in the Citadel.
- Fawkes: Found in Vault 87. When you rescue him from captivity in the quest Finding the Garden of Eden, he'll help you out for the remainder of the quest and then leave your party. You'll be able to recruit him ocne again if you have good karma when he comes to rescue you from Raven Rock. At this point Fawkes carries a Gattling Laser and is absolutely deadly with it.
- Butch: If you managed to release the vault dwellers from Vault 101 in the quest Trouble on the Homefront, Butch will be hanging out at the Muddy Rudder in Rivet City. You can get him to join your party if you have neutral karma.
- RL-3: The Mister Gutsy robot RL-3 can be found and purchased from Tinker Joe outside of the Robco Factory for 1000 caps. You must have neutral karma in order for him to agree to become your follower.
- Charon: Charon is a gun for hire that is currently under the employ of Azhrukhal. You can either buy the contract off of Azhrukhal for 1000-2000 caps depending on your speech skill, or you can kill Greta for him. Once you get the contract, tell Charon and he'll kill Azhrukhal. It doesn't matter what kind of karma you have with Charon; he'll follow anyone who's holding his contract.
- Jericho: Found in Megaton. If you have bad karma and 1000 caps, you can buy Jericho's company.
- Clover: Found in Paradise Falls. Talk to Eulogy Jones and if you have bad karma, he'll let you have Clover.
Alien Ship
- If you travel directly north of the Minefield, southeast from Cliffside Shacks, or southwest from Vault 92, you'll eventually pick up a radio signal titled "Recon Craft Theta Beacon." Keep it on and search around the area until you find a crashed alien space ship.
- If the signal disappears, you'll know that you ventured too far.
- Move around to the front of the spaceship and you'll see a dead alien with a Alien Blaster on the floor.
- Pick up the blaster along with all of the ammo since its the only ammo for this gun that you'll be able to find in the game.
- The blaster is extremely powerful and its ammo should be conserved to be used only on tougher foes like Super Mutant Masters, Sentry Bots, Deathclaws, and Giant Radscorpions.
- TIP: To the northeast of the Smith Casey Garage, there is a large crater. At the bottom of this crater there is an overturned military truck containing approximately 96 Alien Energy Cells. If you ever run low on ammo for the Alien Blaster, this is the best place to restock.

The Experimental MIRV Fatman
- The Experimental MIRV is easily the most well hidden and most devastating weapon in the game, but it'll take a lot of effort in order to find it.
- The first thing you need to do is track down all of the Keller Tapes that are hidden throughout the wasteland.
- The first tape is located directly north of the VAPL-58 Power Station. A good way to get there is to fast travel to Arefu, head southwest, and look for power lines. You'll find the tape at the base of one of the power lines surrounded by cheaply made walls.
- You can find the second one inside the podium at the Hallowed Moors Cemetery, north of Big Town. A good time to pick this up is during the quest Big Trouble in Big Town.
- The third tape is located just outside of Grisly's Diner. You can get there by heading north from the Temple of the Union which you should have on your map if you've completed the Head of State sidequest. The tape is located on a desk near the back entrance of the diner.
- Tape number 4 is located in an abandonned shack on top of a cliff near Rockbreaker's Last Gas. To find it, travel northeast from Little Lamplight, past Everglow National Campground.
- The fifth and final tape is located in a Super Mutant tent north of Anchorage Memorial. The tent itself is hidden behind a large jackknifed truck.
- Once you have all five tapes, head to the National Guard Depot on the east of the map. It is located on the east side of the wasteland, northeast of the Vault Tec Headquarters.
- Once inside you want to fight your way through the depot, through the training grounds, and through the offices until you reach a door that leads to the depot again.
- You'll see an electrical switch in front of you that will unlock the utility door down below. Drop down and head inside.
- There will be another electrical switch nearby that will activate a trap door that will lead you into the armory.
- Head inside the armory and ransack all that you need. Make sure especially to grab the Small Guns Bobblehead.
- Once you're ready, activate the terminal and unlock the door using the password learned from the 5 Keller Tapes.
- At the end of the hall there will be a Glowing One sitting down. Put it out of its misery and then pick up your Experimental MIRV.
- The Experimental MIRV is essentially a Fat Man that launches 8 mini nukes simultaneously. Easily making it the most powerful weapon in the game, but also the most dangerous and costly. I'd only recommend using it to show off to your friends or to take down a troublesome Super Mutant Behemoth.
