Trouble on the Homefront
- This quest can be accessed anytime after the main quest Scientific Pursuits by traveling near Vault 101. You'll pick up an emergency radio broadcast from Amata telling you that things have gone very bad inside the Vault ever since you left.
- Fast travel over to your home vault and head inside to see what the problem is.
- Open the vault door by activating the control pod and entering the password "Amata". If you can't activate the control pod, it means you need to listen to Amata's radio message.
- Once you're inside, enter the small room to your right and examine Steve Armstrong's corpse for a Stealth Boy.
- Enter the door to the west and you'll be stopped by Officer Gomez. Have him bring you up to speed on what's been going on in the vault since you and your father left.
- Once you've squeezed Gomez of all the information he has, you can decide to have him lead you to Amata or the Overseer, you tell him you'll see what you can do about things and explore the vault yourself, or you can tell him to ignore the fact that you were there and just ignore the troubles of the vault all together. If you choose the last option, the quest will be completed and you won't be able to enter Vault 101 ever again.
- I'm going to assume you didn't choose to abandon Vault 101. Head through the door to the west, go down the stairs and enter the door to the Atrium.
- Move forward to see a quick little scene involving Officer Taylor facing off against Freddie Gomez. Once its over you can get an earful from Taylor if you wish, but more importantly, you'll need to decide how you want to complete this quest.
- There are three ways to approach completing this quest and they all depend on which side you want to align yourself with. You can side with Amata and the rebels, with the Overseer, or with Butch.
- Siding With the Rebels:
- If you want to side with the rebels, you're going to want to seek out Amata. You'll find her in the vault clinic, otherwise known as your father's former office.
- From the Atrium, head through the door on the south wall marked storage.
- Open the door and keep on heading west, through the Diner door at which point you'll be forced to head north.
- Head through the doorway marked Atrium and continue up the stairs.
- You'll run into Butch along the way. He'll tell you about how the Vault can be sabotaged and will even offer to give you a haircut. If you decide you'd rather side with Butch, skip to the section entitled "Siding with Butch."
- Otherwise, continue heading forward until you reach the clinic on your left side. Amata will start talking to you as soon as you enter.
- Tell her that you'll stop the Overseer and she'll plead that you not kill him.
- NOTE: Now would be a good time to remember your actions back in the quest "Escape". If you killed the Overseer on your way out of the vault, the new overseer will be Allen Mack. Unfortunately, he won't be able to be reasoned with as he saw how things ended when the previous Overseer tried to reason with you. You'll have to kill him if you want to go this path of siding with the Rebels.
- Head up to the upper level of the Atrium. Before you hit the Overseer's office, go to the security room where you saw Amata being interrogated by her father. Lockpick the door or hack the terminal to unlock it and free Mr. Brotch. You'll learn that the guards are planning to raid the rebels without the overseer's knowledge or permission.
- Now head for the Overseer's office and decide on whether you want to solve things diplomatically, or with a bullet to the head.
- Your options for solving this problem through the use of words are to use your speech skill to convince him that he can't possible keep the vault dwellers cooped up forever.
- If you fail the speech challenge, you'll have to return to Amata to tell her your progress and then try again.
- If you fail again, you'll have to bring to light the fact that the guards are planning to attack Amata and her rebels.
- And if you don't want to do that, the only option left is to kill the Overseer.
- Once the situation is taken care of, return to Amata to report. She'll tell you that she's already heard what you did, and surprisingly, no matter what action you took, she'll thank you for doing what had to be done.
- You'll learn that Amata will take over duties as Overseer and as her first order of business, she is banishing you from Vault 101 forever. In a nod to the original Fallout, she echos the line of "I'm sorry. You're a hero... and you have to leave."
- NOTE: If you didn't kill the overseer, you'll receive a Modified Utility Jumpsuit.
- Leave the vault, and you'll be done with this quest, and with Vault 101. Quest Completed
- Siding with the Overseer
- If you want to side with the Overseer, go see him before talking to Amata and the rebels. Tell him that you'll agree to help stop the rebels.
- Before you leave, take a look at his terminal and select the first option. It seems that the Overseer was contacted by the Enclave and refused them entry into the vault.
- Go visit Amata in the clinic on the lower level of the atrium on the west side. Look for a doorway marked Atrium that has a stairway leading up.
- You'll find Amata in the clinic where your dad used to work. Talk to her and either use your speech skill to convince her that the outside world is too dangerous, or use the information that you learned from the terminal in the Overseer's office.
- Once you've convinced Amata, return to the Overseer and tell him the news. He'll give you a Modified Utility Jumpsuit and will also ban you from ever returning to the Vault.
- Exit Vault 101 to complete the quest. Quest Completed
- Siding With Butch
- The final method of completing this quest is to sabotage the vault's Water Chip Terminal. You'll get this optional objective by talking with Butch when you're on your way to meet with Amata.
- After you finish talking with Butch, turn around to face west and head back down the stairs.
- Follow the signs that point to the reactor to reach the Vault Sub-Level.
- Go straight into the Filter Room and look around for Stanley. If you don't have at least 75 skill points in Science, you're going to have to either pickpocket or kill Stanley to get the password to the terminal. If you have a Stealth-Boy, it makes pickpocketing way easier.
- With the password in hand, enter door to the left of the entrance and work your way to the terminal overlooking the generator.
- Select Begin Water Chip Service, then Begin Manual Service, and then Run Systems Purge. Even if you did pickpocket Stanley earlier as opposed to killing him, he's going to die horribly if he's still in working on the generator.
- With the Vault sabotaged, it's time to leave. Make your way to the exit only to be stopped by the Overseer on the way.
- If the Overseer is Mack, you're going to have to kill him. Otherwise you might be able to convince the Overseer that it was the fault of the rebels and not have to kill him.
- Make your way to the entrance of the Vault and you'll run into Amata along the way. You can try to convince her that it was the fault of the Overseer. Either way won't make a huge difference. It'll just affect whether or not Amata hates you.
- Once your conversation with Amata is over, it's time to leave the Vault and complete this quest. Quest Complete

Agatha's Song
- A short distance northeast of the Mersetti Trainyard there is a small house that can only be accessed by use of a rickety old bridge leading into a small valley.
- In this house lives a well mannered old lady named Agatha. Talk to her and you'll learn that she's actually a musician who makes her living by paying caravans with her gift of song.
- Continue the conversation and you'll learn that her current violin is only homemade and isn't quite in tune. She longs for a violin that was previously owned by her great-great-grandmother, Hilda. She says that Hilda managed to make it into Vault 92 when the bombs fell and that she kept her violin in a pressurized container that should keep the violin in good condition even after 200 years.
- As you might expect, your job is to find and retrieve the violin for Agatha. Unfortunately, Agatha does not know the location of Vault 92, so she recommends that you visit the Vault Tec Headquarters to see if you can learn the location through their records.
- TIP: You can use your Speech or Ladykiller Perk if you have it to ask Agatha if there's anything she can do to help. If you succeed, Agatha will give you the key to her ammo crate which has plenty of ammo for guns of all shapes and sizes.
- When you're ready, head outside and get ready to trek towards Vault 92.
- NOTE: Going to the Vault Tec Headquarters is completely optional since this guide will tell you where the vault is. However, going to the Vault Tec Headquarters is a profitable adventure since it not only tells you where Vault 92 is, but the locations of all of the vaults in the wasteland. You'll find the Vault Tec HQ in the northern part of the D.C Ruins, just above Vernon Square.
- Vault 92 is located in the northeastern corner of the wasteland. The best way to get there would be to either travel northeast from the Minefield, or east from the Oasis if you've done that quest yet.
- Once you head inside the already opened vault door, make sure to open the first aid kits and pick up the supplies on the table to your right.
- Open the door ahead and you'll be met with a bloatfly and a frag mine on the floor. Ground the Bloatfly and then disarm the mine.
- NOTE: Vault 92 is a huge labyrinth with many areas to explore. This guide will note the quickest route to your quest objective. After you obtain the violin, I would highly recommend taking the time to explore the rest of the Vault on your own, not only because of the many useful items and supplies to be found (Including a Nuka Cola Quantum,) but also because the story of what happened to Vault 92 that is told through computer terminals and taped messages is very interesting and shouldn't be missed.
- Proceed through the door on the east side and be immediately ready to disarm a mine on the other side of the doorway.
- Head down the hallway into the next room and put a bullet or two in the pestering Bloatfly.
- Enter the door to the east and get ready to shoot down another Bloatfly as soon as the door opens.
- Follow the path down the stairs and take the door straight ahead to reach the Sound Testing area.
- As soon as you emerge in Sound Testing, be prepared to deal with a whole horde of Mirelurks. Keep your finger over the B button to be ready for Stimpack usage and bring out your best non-explosive weaponry since they're likely to get up close and personal very quickly.
- Once your compass no longer shows any red ticks, you can explore the classrooms to find Zoe Hammerstein's terminal and an audio log from Professor Malleus.
- When you're ready to move on, turn right from where you entered and follow the corridor westward until you see a path open up on your left that leads down into the lab.
- Take the stairs down and make a left when you reach a junction. Make another left and then follow the path into the Recording Studio. You'll likely find a Mirelurk Hunter or Mirelurk King guarding the studio, so approach with caution.
- Once the Mirelurk is down, enter the studio and take all the goodies you see including a Nikola Tesla and You skillbook and another one of Professor Malleus' logs.
- Activate the studio computer and unlock the Recording Studio door.
- Go around to the other side of the Recording Studio and open the door you just unlocked. Inside you'll find a wall safe and the Soil Stradivarius violin that you came here for. Grab the violin and lockpick the safe, and you're ready to go.
- Once you're finished exploring Vault 92, head back to the entrance, fast travel back to Agatha's House, give her the Violin, and your quest will be completed. Quest Completed
- NOTE: If you're feeling particularly mean, you can lie to Agatha and tell her that you haven't found the Violin. You can then sell the Violin off to either Abraham Washington in Rivet City or Ahzrukhal in Underworld.
