This page provides information about the achievements available in Broken Steel, the third downloadable expansion for the successful role-playing game, Fallout 3.
"Broken Steel" initially had difficulties with players not being credited for the Achievements they earn. Bethesda explains, "The Xbox Live servers don't seem to be fully synched yet with the additional Achievements. Microsoft is looking into it right now so that the Achievements folks have gotten will show up properly on Live (the game awards them, they just aren't showing up right on Live for some reason). People won't lose any Achievements."Joystiq: Broken Steel Achievements not showing up on Live, fix incoming (May 6, 2009)As of the morning of May 8, 2009, Microsoft had fixed the issue so that Achievements are properly being credited to user accounts.Eurogamer: Broken Steel PC and 360 fixed (May 8, 2009)

Complete All Level 30 Achievements (in one gameplay)
The last three Fallout 3 - Broken Steel Achievements are Devil, True Mortal and Messiah. This section provides a walkthrough on how to:1) Get the Messiah, True Mortal and Devil Achievements (in a single gameplay), AND 2) Still be able to take either of the Level 30 perks, AND 3) End with your choice of Karma.
This process may be completed BEFORE, DURING or AFTER the completion of any or all of the other three Broken Steel Achievements (Death From Above, Shock Value, Who Dares Wins).
PRIOR to Level 29:
SAVE at just over 62,000 XP but less than 62,300 (which is Level 29); between 62,200 XP and 62,250 XP would be perfect.
After the SAVE, progress normally to Level to 29.
- It is recommended that you dismiss any followers once you reach Level 29 as their actions may inadvertently affect your Karma status. They may be regained after reaching Level 30. An added benefit is that, depending on the Karma with which you decide to complete the game, you can thus choose from several followers, some of whom may have been previously unavailable due to your Karma at that time.
From Level 29, you need 4,400 XP to reach Level 30 (66,700 XP).- NOTE: The objective is to prgress from Level 29 to Level 30 three times without affecting Karma during the leveling. There's a couple of ways to do this:
ONE (only Scrap Metal method available if you destroyed Citadel): Save A LOT of the following items to use for this critical level-up (this will prevent any changes to your Karma during leveling):
Each Camera (sell to Rothchild) yields 25 XP (should be able to get around 80, which is 2,000 XP) Each Sensor Module (sell to Rothchild) yields 10 XP (should be able to get around 100, which is 1,000 XP) Each Blood Sample (sell to Tristan) yields 10 XP (should be able to get around 50, which is 500 XP) Each Scrap Metal (sell to Walter, or trade to Casdin or Winthrop) yields 5 XP (should be able to get 150, which is 750 XP) (NOTES on Scrap Metal: do NOT give them away to Walter unless you need to posively affect Karma. Also, rumor is that selling 287 Scrap Metal AT THE SAME TIME to Walter will result in an immediate level-up, though this is not confirmed. Additionally, if Casdin and Walter are both available to you, there is an apparent glitch which provides unlimited XP. Google for details.)
Getting the above suggested items will yield 4,250 of the 4,400 XP needed to level-up from 29 to 30. You do not need to get the above items for a no-Karma-change (NKC) level-up, but every item helps.
TWO: Of course, killing any Evil creature or character (Mutants, Radskorpions, Ghouls, Raiders, Enclave, Deathclaws, Molerats, etc.) does NOT affect Karma. (I am not certain if killing Slavers, Talon Company or Regulators will affect Karma.) However, be cautious, as even the accidental killing of a Neutral/Good creature or character will negatively affect Karma. Likewise, the killing a Very Evil character or creature will positively affect Karma. Simply Fast Traveling around and killing mutants is a fairly good and safe way to obtain a NKC level-up - especially if you have the Chinese Stealth Suit, as sneaking in this suit will prevent attacks otherwise initiated by a Fast Travel.
Changing the DIFFICULTY setting to HARD or VERY HARD will increase the amount of XP earned per kill.
At Level 29, do the following: (This process will begin and end with Very Good Karma. To end your character with opposite Karma, see the NOTE below.)Take the Karmic Rebalance Perk at Level 29 (becoming "Gray Stranger"), Level Up to 30, gaining "True Mortal" and the Achievement
RELOAD from SAVE prior to Level 29
Take the Devil's Highway Perk at Level 29 (becoming "Demon's Spawn"), Level Up to 30, gaining "Devil" and the Achievement
RELOAD from SAVE prior to Level 29
Take the Escalator to Heaven Perk at Level 29 (becoming "Earthly Angel"), Level Up to 30, gaining "Messiah" and the Achievement
NOTE: This will give you each of the three last achievements in the Broken Steel DLC (Messiah, True Mortal and Devil), ending the character with Messiah. The process may be adjusted based on your Karma status at the beginning of Level 29 and your decision with which to end. For example, if your character is (Very) Evil at Level 29 and you wish to end with (Very) Good, you should simply take a different Perk (anything that does NOT affect Karma) at Level 29 the first time through, complete as (Very) Evil, RELOAD, take Karmic Rebalance, complete as Neutral, RELOAD, take Escalator to Heaven and complete for the final time as a (Very) Good character. Same process, replacing Escalator to Heaven with Devil's Highway, if going from (Very) Good to (Very) Evil. You may end as a Neutral character (True Mortal), but there is little benefit to this, and Neutral Karma is difficult to maintain. Neutral followers (such as Butch and Sergeant RL-3) may be obtained after Level 30 by becoming Neutral, and either will remain with the character even if Karma becomes Good/Very Good; however, neither will remain if Karma becomes Evil/Very Evil. This does not include the various glitches which enables the player, with precise timing, to obtain multiple followers of varying Karma qualifications.
IF your Karma changes during the leveling from 29 to 30 (which can be checked via the PipBoy), there are several ways to correct it.To POSITIVELY affect Karma:
Donate (i.e. to Confessor Cromwell at Rivet City). 1 Karma per cap donated. Sell fingers. 10 Karma per finger sold. Give Scrap Metal to Walter. 10 Karma per Scrap Metal given. Giving Water. 50 Karma per Purified Water given. NOTE: It is usually easiest to donate money to positively affect Karma quickly.
To NEGATIVELY affect Karma:
Steal from a Non-Evil Character. -5 Karma per steal. Hack (even attempt to hack) a locked computer. -5 Karma per attempt. Can be done repeatedly. Kill a Good/Neutral creature (i.e. Brahmin; not "mad" Brahmin). -25 Karma per kill. Kill a Good/Neutral character. -100 Karma per kill. Enslaving any character via the Mesmetron. -100 per enslavement. NOTE: A slow, but usually safe means of negatively affecting Karma is to repeatedly hack computers; just stay unseen. Moriarty in Megaton has a well-hidden one.
BEFORE reaching Level 30 (66,700 XP), make certain that your Karma is set according to your current achievement objective. If it is not, make the necessary Karma changes ASAP. It is recommended to maintain Save files between Level 29 and Level 30, provided that the primary SAVE just before Level 29 is not deleted or overwritten (at least not until AFTER you obtain all three achievements). Do NOT approach 66,700 XP (Level 30) with the wrong Karma, as this will necessitate a restart from a viable Save.
At Level 30, choose either the "Almost Perfect" or "Nuclear Anomaly" Perk.
This concludes Fallout 3 - Broken Steel. Have fun! -
