  • Why Do Leaves Change Color?

Leaves contain three different substances that give them color.

    1. Chlorophyll, is necessary for photosynthesis gives the leaves their characteristic green color during the photosynthesis. As days shorten, photosynthesis slows and stops, and the chlorophyll dies, revealing the other colors produced by the carotenoids and anthrocyanins in the leaves.
    2. Carotenoids, which produce yellow, orange, and brown are dominated by the green chlorophyll during the summer.
    3. Anthocyanins, which produce deep reds, develop during the late summer and early autumn in response to the sugar levels in the leaves.
    4. Waste products left in leaves also contribute to browns.http://www.sciencemadesimple.com/leaves.html
