Fall Foliage
Fall Foliage happens in response to the cooler temperature of the Fall. Many of the colors viewed during the Fall Foliage season are always present in the leaf, but the green color, caused by chlorophyll, hides the other colors. The chlorophyll is produced to allow the leaf to absorb more sunlight, but the production is disrupted when cooler temperature arrives. This allows the brighter colors to be viewed. The red color, however, is different, and is only present in the Fall. It comes from the production of anthocyanins, which is often produced when trees suffer from environmental stress.Live Science: Fall Foliage: Why Leaves Change Color (October 16, 2008)
