The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on October 31, 2009, that approximately 545,699 pounds of ground beef has been recalled by Fairbank Farms due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7.http://www.fsis.usda.gov/News_&_Events/Recall_059_2009_Release/index.asp Fairbank Farms distributes ground beef throughout the Northeast.
E. Coli O157:H7

Escheria coli is a bacteria that causes food poisoning. E. coli O157:H7 is a strain of the bacteria that produces a toxin which can cause severe and potentially fatal illness. Symptoms of E. coli infection include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (which may be bloody), and vomiting. Most people recover in 5-7 days, but about 5-10% of those infected will develop Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) will may cause kidney failure and death.http://www.cdc.gov/nczved/dfbmd/disease_listing/stec_gi.html
