Facebook Wins Case Against 'Spam King'

  • On October 29, 2009, Facebook announced it won a lawsuit against Internet marketer Sanford Wallace, resulting in a $711 million fine to be paid to the California based company. Wallace, nicknamed the ‘Spam King’, illegally accessed users accounts and sent posts and messages in their name. Next to the fine, Wallace will also be prosecuted for criminal contempt. http://blog.facebook.com/ http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/30/sanford-wallace-facebook-_n_339703.html
  • Background

    • Facebook filed their case in February, 2009 against three spammers, Adam Arzoomanian, Scott Shaw, and Wallace. In March, this lead to a temporary restraining order, issued by the San Jose court against the three. http://blog.facebook.com/
    • The successful lawsuit against Wallace is the second big lawsuit Facebook has win against spammers. In November 2008, they got Adam Guerbuez and Atlantis Blue Capital convicted to paying a $873 million damages payment for mass spamming Facebook users. Both convictions were started under the CAN-SPAM, a 2003 act setting national standards for the sending of commercial e-mail. Even though Facebook doesn’t expect to receive the majority of the fines, it says it will continue to continue the legal fight, and hopes these claims will deter future spammers. http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/facebook_wins_873_million_case_against_spammer</ref>http://blog.facebook.com/</ref>
