Facebook and Tumblr Used to Find Vancouver Rioters
When the Canucks lost the Stanely Cup to the Boston Bruins the night of June 15, 2011, hundreds of angry fans rioted in Vancouver.c Nearly 100 people were arrested, at least 15 vehicles destroyed and eight people stabbed in the senseless rampage. The mayhem began shortly after the Bruins won their first NHL championship in 39 years, defeating the Canucks 4-0. Rioters clashed with police and damaged public property throughout the city.c
Now social networks such as Facebook and Tumblr are being used in an effort to identify the reckless culprits.c "Post your riot pics," the Facebook page requests. More than 60,000 people have become fans of the page so far, with uploaded photos depicting the riots from the inside-out. On the Tumblr page "Vancouver 2011 Riot Criminal List," the administrator asks people to send their photographs and information regarding rioter's identities directly to Vancouver police.c
On June 16, sanitation workers continued the widespread cleanup efforts to repair parts of downtown Vancouver.
