Face Raiders is a first person shooting game. It was developed and published by Nintendo and is packed in with the Nintendo 3DS. The game came out in Japan on February 26, 2011, in Europe on March 25, 2011, in the United States on March 27, 2011, and in Australia on March 31, 2011. The software takes advantage of the many features that were built in with the system, including the 3D camera and the gyroscope. This walkthrough will serve as a general guide on how the game works.
Gameplay
As stated before, Face Raiders is like a first person shooter. Before the game starts, the game will prompt you into take some pictures. It will want you to take multiple photos of actual faces, whether it is from a real person or someone from a photograph. The faces you capture will then be integrated into the game as characters you can interact with. The characters will interact with the environment around you and you must shoot them down by moving the system, which is where the use of the gyroscope comes from. The game itself has nine different levels across two different modes. Six of the levels are part of the main mode of play, where you must shoot down the faces that appear around you before you get into a boss battle. The other three levels are part of the Show a Friend mode. This mode is designed as a tutorial mode which is meant for players who are new to the 3DS features. Another feature of this game is Surprise Snaps. If this feature is turned on, the game will randomly take pictures of people around you during game play.
Stage 1
- Every time you begin any of the normal stages, you will have to take a photo.
- In this level, you will begin to find enemies just like the ones in the tutorial stage. Shoot at them for points.
- Introduced for this level are the armored faces. They will protect themselves by turning around. If you shoot at them, they will fly into the background. That may cause debris to fly towards you. So shoot that debris to destroy it or avoid it by keeping it out of your view.
- Once in a while, bombs will appear. Shoot at these bombs and you will add them to your ammo. Press the B button to activate the bomb if the level gets too hectic.
- The boss for this level is a large armored face. Start the battle by shooting it in the face a few times.
- After a few hits, the boss will put on a mask to protect itself. Three face minions will then show up. Two of them are regular enemies and the other is armored.
- You could shoot the regular enemies for points if you want. However, you will want to shoot the armored enemy when the boss is behind it. If you time it right, the armored enemy will fly into the boss and cause damage.
- When the boss is weak, shoot the jewel that is in its forehead.
Stage 2
- In this level, you will meet enemies that have arrows on their heads. When you shoot this enemy, it will change color and move to the direction indicated by its arrow. Shoot it again to defeat it.
- Occasionally, regular enemies will show up to attack you. Just attack them in the usual way.
- Later, helmet enemies will appear. These guys will fly into the air upon being hit. Then they will fall to the bottom. They will be defeated if you can hit them three times.
- When the background opens up, more flying faces will show up and fire white balls towards you. Get rid of these balls by shooting them or by keeping them out of view.
- The boss that appears will come in a pair of faces. One will be real and one will be fake. The fake one will be wearing some facial accessory. Shoot the real one for damage. If both of the faces are fake, do not shoot them.
- The boss will then flip over and show off one of its faces. If the face is not wearing any accessory, shoot it.
- Later, the boss will hide behind the wall. When it shows its face, fire at it if it is not wearing an accessory.
- If you take to long, the boss will spin around and send a lot of debris towards you.
- Once the boss gets weak, shoot the jewel three times to defeat it.
Stage 3
- This level will ask specificaly to take a picture of a square face.
- When the level itself starts, the enemy will show up as square panels on the background.
- When the face is incredibly wide, shooting it will cause it to separate into three faces. If one of them is red, it will fly to you for an attack.
- Some faces will show up eating the background. If you shoot it quickly enough, you may prevent debris from flying towards you.
- Some enemies will appear in groups and have points on their heads. Shooting them will cause them to rotate and glow. If all the enemies in a group are pointing in the same direction and are glowing, they will disappear.
- There will be an enemy that is divided between four rotated panels. Shoot each panel when they are at the correct orientation to defeat it.
- The boss of this level will summon all the faces you have taken so far. Shoot each face so that they are in matching orientations and are glowing. Then shoot the jewel. Be careful not to shoot the minion faces as you try to aim.
- When the boss turns its back on you, it will send panels towards you. Watch out for those.
Final Stage
- This level will ask you to take a photo of someone who you find inspirational.
- The main level is fairly short. At the beginning, many face minions will show up and try to fire balls towards you.
- A tennis racket will show up later on. Shoot at it once and it will deflect the shot back at you. Then deflect that shot with your own and the enemy will try to deflect it back at you. Repeat the process until the enemy is stunned. Then fire at it to defeat it.
- Fire at any enemies that show up from the background. Watch out when they fly towards you or fire at you.
- The boss will soon show up and have six shards come out of it with six lasers in their places. To damage this boss, wait for a laser to charge up. Then fire the adjacent shard. The laser will then be deflected onto one of the shards next to it. If those shards are not flipped, the laser will be deflected to you. Otherwise, they will be deflected back at the boss if they are next to another laser turret or to the next shard if the slot is empty.
- The direction the boss will rotate depends on which direction the laser willl travel in. For example, if the boss is rotating clockwise then the laser will move counterclockwise.
- Once all the turrets are gone, the boss will reveal its face. Shoot at the face when it is open and watch out for the shards that it throws at you.
- When the boss looks like it is down, shoot it in the afro. The afro will then come off and constantly rotate.
- Do not shoot the afro in the hair because it will counter you will powerful star shots. Instead, shoot at the face when it appears from behind the afro.
- The afro will gradually get close to you as the battle goes on. You may have to be quick with hitting the boss or let the afro hit you.
- Once the boss is weak, shoot the jewel that appears on the forehead.
Bonus Stage
- This level is unlocked if you collect three faces through Show a Friend mode.
- In this stage, you shoot a face and it will fly in the air. Keep on shooting that face and it will eventually disappear.
- The number on the face indicates how many hits it takes to get rid of that face.
- The blue ones move at normal speed. The purple ones are much lighter so they tend to move fast. The dark ones do not fly high and are much heavier.
- The level will end if you let a face drop to the bottom. If you can rescue at least one face, the stage will be completed.
Extra Stage
- This level is unlocked by finishing all the previous levels and collecting a few merged faces through the 3DS camera.
- This level is a marathon of the initial four levels. Also, each level is slightly harder than they were initially.
- During the battle against the first boss, it will be on a slightly different altitude from the minion faces. When you have to direct a spiked face to the boss, hit it at an angle.
- The second boss will spin around and throw a barrage of balls if you hit the fake.
- The third boss will constantly change the movement patterns of the minion faces you must hit.
- The last boss will have a much shorter charge when firing its lasers during the sphere segment and moves much faster during the afro segment.
- If you lose and use a continue, you will be allowed to start off at the beginning of whichever stage you are on.
