Through generations the look of the eyes has had different styles. The smokey look of the flappers in the 1920’s carried through until the more intense and sensual look of the 1940’s, the models of the 1960’s again brought back the heavy eyeliner with dark lashes heavily spiked with mascara.http://www.fashion-era.com/make_up_part_2.htm The style for the 1970’s was a lighter look with whites and blues using crisply defined lines. The turn of the century began with women that knew blending and shading techniques and practiced them using shaped a variety of wedge shaped brushes, and mineral based make up.

Background
The invention of the color movies made eye makeup more important to the women and teens of the time. They saw the heavy makeup that actors wore and attempted to emulate them by increasing their brow line and bringing in heavier eyeliner and mascara. The Elizabeth Taylor look was the fad of the times.http://www.fashion-era.com/make_up_part_2.htm
By the seventies, the lighter pale eye shadows and the vivid blues were what the actors wore on television and in movies, again women of the day emulated the look and went to a softer pastel eye makeup. By the 1980’s until the 2000’s the darker eye shadow palettes for the club look was more in vogue.
Uses
To successfully apply eye makeup, it is important to know how the product will enhance your eyes. The first thing is the shadow; when selecting colors, you will want to have complimentary colors that will blend and look as if they truly belong on the eyes.
Starting at the bottom of the lid, apply the darkest color first and in the center. The next layer will go above that dark color and will go into the crease of the eye. Only the lightest color will go onto the brow line. Once the colors are applied then you can take your brush and begin to blend the lines so that they meld into one another, creating a smooth look.
Once you have your shadow as you like it that is the time to bring in the eyeliner. Starting with the outer edge of the lid and draw in a line thinning as you go so that once it passes the center it is a much finer line. Blend the liner as you did the eye shadow so that there are no harsh lines of color.
Now you are ready to apply mascara. Choose a mascara that compliments your brows and skin tone. Once you have chosen your color then apply from the base of the lash t the tip in one smooth sweep. Allow this coat to dry then apply a second coat. Two coats will make the lashes darker and look longer.
