Extravaganza is a music festival that is held annually on the campus of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Extravaganza began in 1979 and since 1989 has been held every year. This music festival is held at the end of Spring quarter in Harder Stadium. It draws a large audience each year, particularly because even non-UCSB students can attend for free. Hip hop is the main genre played at this festival, but there are usually also pop and rock artists in the lineup.
The headliner for 2009 was Ludacris. A small selection of the many notable artists who have performed at Extravaganza in the past include NAS, Busta Rhymes, Eve 6, Jack Johnson, No Doubt and the Black Eyed Peas.
Extravaganza formed originally to showcase talented local musicians, however it has now expanded far beyond its origins and places more emphasis on headlining acts. It once played over two stages, but this was changed to only one stage in 2005 in order to concentrate on bringing in smaller amounts of bigger name musicians.
Generally the festival runs only during the day, but in 2009 for the 30th anniversary of Extravaganza, the concert ran from mid-afternoon to midnight. Local acts are often showcased in this concert, including one selected through a battle of the bands type competition (the winner for 2010 is Soul Minded). Local short films are also sometimes shown between sets.
Extravaganza Festival Amenities
Extravaganza is a one day event held at Harder Stadium. The stage is constructed on one side of the field while there are numerous stalls with activities (such as mock sumo wrestling and rock climbing) and merchandise, including food and water on the other side. People entering the festival are required to submit to a search, as no alcohol, recording devices, or animals may be brought into the site. As Extravaganza runs during the day it is recommended that festival goers come prepared for the sun with sun screen and hats.
There is some parking with a $2 fee to park on campus.
