An external hard drive is an external storage device that connects to a personal computer. It's main functions are portability and the backup of data. In order to copy files to an external hard drive, you must first install the correct drivers onto the computer so it will recognize the device. External hard drives normally connect to a computer using USB or a firewire. In a Windows-based environment, files may be moved by clicking and dragging to the appropriate folder under "My Computer".
