EverQuest 2 continues the saga begun in the 3D Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) EverQuest. Both of these games take place on the world of Norath however EQ2 takes place in a separate timeline which begins during the time when the plains of time were invaded. Because of the invasion of the God’s domain by the mortals the Gods in this timeline decided to remove their influence form the mortal plane for an undetermined period of time. There have been six Expansions and three Adventure Packs added to the original version of the game. There have also been a total of 55 updates to add features and fix problems. The next update is due in late May and will bring in an additional city. New Halas is located on the floating iceberg called Erollis which is in the Fanged Sea and was created by Mithaniel Marr to honor his fallen sister Erollisi.

Both games deal with the fictional world of Norath and with the various cities and continents. The storyline of EverQuest 2 takes place 500 years after mortals invaded the planes of the Gods but on a different time line. This means that anything done in EverQuest on Norath will no longer affect EverQuest 2. During the intervening time a series of disasters occurred that would affect the world of Norath. Shortly after the timeline separated form that of EverQuest the moon of Luclin was laid under siege and as a result all contact was severed and the shroud was erected permanently. Then the forces of good on the continent of Faydwer were invaded by the forces of evil and as a result Felwithe, the city of the High Elves, was destroyed by the battle and Kelethin, the tree city of the Wood Elves, was partially destroyed by fire and Neriak, the city of the Dark Elves, was sealed from the outer world by rock brought down during the counter attack of the Halflings and the Wood Elves. The second Rallosian Army was raised by the Avatar of War and besieged much of Norath including the cities of Qeynos and Freeport but was stopped by others among the Avatars of the Gods. Now Norath was besieged by earthquakes that resulted in the Rending which caused destruction of not only the cities of Norath but the continents as well leaving the world a totally different looking place. The game uses WASD directional controls as well as the mouse and other command keys. To begin you create a character and determine what sex, race, class and alignment, you wish to pursue in the world of Norath. Once you enter the game world you obtain and complete quests and slay NPC opponents to gain experience and achievements which allow you to progress and improve your skills. You may also choose to pursue a a crafting class in addition to the adventure class and make various items for use by player characters.

Another option is Player Versus Player, or PVP, which happens on specific servers dedicated to player to player violence and is essentially a war between the "good" and "evil" factions within the game.

The non PVP servers which comprise the majority of servers are known as Player Versus Environment or PVE servers.
