The North Carolina born entertainer started her career on televison in small roles, but in 1998 she landed a supporting role in the Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman star vehicle Practical Magic. That was followed by a starring role in the film S1m0ne with Al Pacino.

In 2003, she gained critical acclaim for her performance in the teen drama Thirteen with Holly Hunter.

She is now considered one of Hollywood's most successful young leading ladies with high profile roles in the indie hits Pretty Persuasion, Down in the Valley and Across the Universe.
