European Poker Tour

The European Poker Tour is an annual televised event first held in 2004. The event is sponsored by and co-owned by the online poker website PokerStars. The event is largely similar to other major televised poker tournaments, including the World Poker Tour.

The show's sixth season ended with an extended "Grand Final" event held in Monte Carlo, Monaco, from April 25 to April 30, 2010. Nicolas Chouity was the winner, with 128 total players earning payouts. Chouity is not a professional poker player, but an amateur who had won a spot at the event after winning a satellite tournament on the PokerStars website. Chouity has started playing by entering a $22 tournament. http://www.tourneyblog.com/category/Land-Tournaments/PokerStars-Qualifier-wins-EPT-Monte-Carlo-201005050003/

Plans are underway for the show's seventh season, which is set to kick off in Tallinn, Estonia.

PokerStars Qualification

Winners of satellite tournaments on PokerStars can become eligible for a seat at a European Poker Tour event. Various tournaments have different buy-in amounts, with many of them aimed at players who don't have a lot of money to spend. (Some tournaments can even be entered by cashing in "Frequent Player Points," without ponying up any actual money.)http://www.europeanpokertour.com/how_to_enter/

In many of the tournaments, players begin at a table with eight others. The top two biggest winners at these tables progress to the next round. During the show's fifth season, more than 2,000 of the players on the Tour had won their seats by competing in tournaments on PokerStars.http://www.europeanpokertour.com/how_to_enter/

Background and History

The European Poker Tour was founded by John Duthie, who had previously won the popular televised European poker tournament, Poker Million. Duthie himself provided color commentary during the games in the show's first season, before turning over the job to Jim Hartigan. Currently, the TV program is hosted by Michelle Orpe and a variety of professional poker players, including Daniel Negreanu and Greg Raymer provide analysis. The show is produced by the sports production company Sunset and Vine.

March 2010 Robbery

A European Poker Tour event in Berlin, Germany, was robbed by a group of 4 men armed with knives and possibly one gun on March 6, 2010. A brief bit of footage showing the in-progress robbery appeared soon after on YouTube, though there is not a lot of visible detail. The event was being held in Berlin's Grand Hyatt Hotel.http://news.bluffmagazine.com/ept-armed-robbery-haults-event-in-berlin-9635/

Three different events were going on in the hotel at the same time - a Ladies' Poker Tournament, a 1,000 Euro No-Limit Hold 'Em Tournament and the EPT Main Event. The event (and webcast) was shut down for the evening, but play resumed the following day.http://news.bluffmagazine.com/ept-armed-robbery-haults-event-in-berlin-9635/

All four robbers were caught in the weeks following the robbery. They were discovered based largely on evidence left behind at the scene, and video surveillance footage from a fast-food restaurant where they ate following the crime. There was apparently some evidence that the robbers had help from someone on the inside, though this was unconfirmed.http://www.pokerplayernewspaper.com/viewarticle.php?id=3717
