Life and Career
Born in New York City in 1923, Estelle Scher married Arthur Gettleman in 1947, and bore him two sons, Barry and Carl. She began acting in 1978, and scored bit roles in the films Tootsie and Mask. After appearing in the Broadway production of Torch Song Trilogy, she was chosen to play mother Sophia Petrillo on the NBC sitcom, The Golden Girls. Even though she was younger than Bea Arthur, Getty played her mother on the show. In 1988, Getty won an Emmy for her work on the hit show.IMDb.com: Estelle Getty
