Espadrilles are a type of canvas or cotton sandal with a heal made to look like rope. Most espadrilles also have a strap or tie around the ankle. Once considered peasant sandals, the shoe has become a warm weather staple for women's footwear.

Espadrilles were first made in Catalonia in as early as the 14th century for both men and women. Originally the sandal was made simply with a canvas covering and top piece cut out and then sewed together on either side to a sole made of rope. The laces, or or ribbon would be used to keep the foot and shoe in place. While the concept of the espadrille has maintained certain original qualities, the texture, color, and design has evolved through the years taking a once inexpensive peasant shoe to a high end level by designers such as DKNY and Michael Kors.
