Escape

Categories: Books | Non Fiction
  • Escape is a book written by Carolyn Jessop about her experience being married to polygamist Merril Jessop for seventeen years. When Carolyn was just eighteen years old, she was forced into an arranged marriage with Jessop, a man thirty two years her elder. She became the fourth of seven wives. The couple eventually had eight children together.

Over the years, Carolyn suffered abuse from her husband. She worked as a school teacher, and was forced to hand over her paychecks to her husband. She was required to ask him for everything, controlling her every move. She was constantly raped in exchange for protection for her children and less emotional abuse.

But, in 2003, she fled to freedom with her eight children. She had only $20 to her name. She was granted custody of her children, becoming the first woman ever granted full custody of her children in a contested suit involving the FLDS.
