Ernie Harwell was a radio sportscaster with a career spanning 55 years. He was born on January 25, 1918 in Washington, Georgia. During his career, he broadcasted games for the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Giants, Baltimore Orioles and Detroit Tigers. He was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 1998. In recent years, he contributed a weekly column to the Detroit Free Press.
He was released from the hospital on August 16, 2009, after a one-week stay for an obstruction in the bile duct. He has canceled all public appearances for the next several weeks.
