  • Career

    After ten years serving with the U.S. Navy, Borgnine got into acting, playing a nurse in the Broadway play Harvey in 1949. In 1953, he starred alongside Frank Sinatra in the film, From Here to Eternity, and later won an Oscar for his portrayal of Marty in the 1955 film of the same name.

    Through the 1960s and 1970s, Borgnine starred in several films, including The Dirty Dozen, The Wild Bunch and The Poseidon Adventure. He also received an Emmy nomination for his role as Quinton McHale in the comedy TV series McHale's Navy from 1962 to 1966. He would return to television again co-starring with Jan-Michael Vincent in the helicopter action series Airwolf.

    In 2007, Borgnine starred in A Grandpa for Christmas, which garnered him a Golden Globe nomination at the age of 90--the oldest person to ever receive one.
