  • Storyline

Julia Roberts stars as Erin, a former beauty queen and single mother of three struggling to make ends meet. She is injured in an auto accident and hires Ed Masry, played by Albert Finney, to represent her in the injury lawsuit. Ed assures her that those responsible will pay for her pain and suffering, but this turns out not to be case when they lose the lawsuit. Not sure what to do next Erin returns to Ed's office and demands a job. Ed unwillingly hires Erin to work on a pro-bono case he is working on. The case involves residents of a small town who suspect ground water poisoning from the local Pacific Gas and Electric Company may be the cause for their chronic illnesses. Erin uses her womanly charm and pageant smile to find documented proof of the contamination, while rallying the town to trust that her and Ed are going to make things right.
