Erik Bedard is a starting Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. He is widely regarded one of the best left handed starting pitchers in the game. But injuries have plagued his career, and he has been unable to display his full potential as a result. While healthy he has displayed glimpses of his greatness, winning the American League Pitcher of the Month in July of 2007 as well as breaking the Orioles single season strikeout record.
Early Life
Erik Joseph Bedard was born in Ontario, Canada on March 6, 1979. He would play baseball in little league and junior leagues in Canada. He would later move on to attend Norwalk Community College in Connecticut where he would make the team as a walk on. He would develop into a junior college All-American and garner attention of Major league baseball clubs.
Pro Career
Bedard would be selected in the sixth round of the 1999 Major League baseball draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He would make his major league debut on April 17, 2002. He would spend four seasons with the Orioles, missing the 2003 season due to injury. He would develop into one of the best left handed pitchers in baseball. In 2007 he would record a record of 13-5 in an injury shortened season. In 2008, with the Orioles unable to meet Bedard's inevitably rising contract demands, he would be traded to the [[Seattle Mariners for Adam Jones, George Sherrill, Kam Mickolio,Tony Butler and Chris Tillman. He would sign a one year deal with the club for seven million dollars.
