Erick Aybar

At 5-foot-10, 170 pounds, shortshop Erick Aybar has always been one of the top prospects for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim since signing with scout Leo Perez in his native Dominican Republic. He's been called by "Baseball America" a "Best Defensive Player" with a "Best Defensive Arm."

Aybar debuted for the Angels in 2006, getting into 34 games that year with 40 at-bats, hit .250 with one double and one triple. Although he saw more playing time in 2007 and got into 79 games, his average dropped to .237 for the AL West-winning Angels. He also had five doubles, a triple, a home run and 19 RBIs for the team that season.

Aybar experienced a breakout season in 2009. Staying healthy all year long, Aybar appeared in 137 games while picking up 157 hits for a solid .312 batting average. He also had five home runs to go along with 58 RBIs, 23 doubles and nine triples. In addition, Aybar set the plate often for the Angels, scoring 70 runs, and he had 14 stolen bases. He led the Majors with 18 bunt hits and was tied for fourth in the AL with 12 sacrifice bunts. Defensively, he was excellent with a fielding percentage of .982, fourth in the AL. And he was the Major's top hitter in July with a batting average of .414 and hit .337 during the final 72 games of the season.

Injuries kept Aybar to playing in just 98 games, but he made the most of it, batting a keen .277 with three homers, 39 RBIs, 18 doubles and five triples. He also scored 53 runs and swiped seven bases. He struck out just a little more than 10 percent of the time -- 45 whiffs in 346 at-bats -- while reaching via the walk 14 times. He also had an on-base percentage of .314 and a slugging mark of .384.
