One week before he was to leave for the 2008 Olympic trials, Eric Shanteau learned he had testicular cancer. Shanteau secured a spot on the Olympic team with a second place finish in the men's 200-meter breaststroke.ESPN.com: Shanteau Plans to Put Off Cancer Surgery Until After Beijing Games (July 11, 2008) Shanteau's doctors recommended he have surgery immediately, but Shanteau opted to wait until after he competes in the Beijing games.
