Eric Peter Jacobsen was the skipper of the Alaska Ranger, a fishing vessel which sank in the Bering Sea on March 23, 2008. 22 crew members survived, but four crew members, including Jacobsen, died in the wreckage, with one more crew member missing. Eric Peter Jacobsen was a third-generation fisherman who spent three-quarters of the year at sea. His stepson, Scott Jacobsen, says he would have died to ensure the safety of others on the boat.
