Kelly, a 14-year veteran of the police force, was finishing an overnight shift when he came to the aid of his fellow officers, who had responded to a domestic disturbance call made by the suspect's mother.   • The Stand-off

    14-year-veteran Eric Kelly was shot and killed trying to offer assistance to two of his fallen comrades in a shootout on April 4, 2009. Officers Stephen Mayhle and Paul Sciullo III were shot in the head after responding to a domestic disturbance call placed by the gunman's mother just before 7:00 a.m. EST. Kelly was just finishing a shift when he heard the call go out on the radio, and he arrived at the scene to help, only to be shot at and killed by Poplawski.

    SWAT team officers were also shot at as Poplawski kept police at bay for four hours as the fallen officers bled to death. During that time 100 gunshots were exchanged, and Poplawski, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was shot multiple times in his legs.
