Eric Dolphy was one of the major Jazz players in the 1950s. An alto saxophonist, flutist and bass clarinetist, Dolphy had an improvisational style characterized by jagged, twisting, leaping series of notes. His is still evident in the music of Herbie Hancock and was occasionally emulated by Miles Davis
Career
Eric Dolphy began his career as a clarinet and saxophone player in big bands in the Los Angeles area. He moved to New York City in 1949 and performed with Miles Davis and George Russell. By the late 1950s Dolphy began to record albums on his own, and earned critical success and a fan base by the early 1960s. Before his death in 1964 Dolphy had recorded well over thirty albums as a solo act and played on several records with well-known musicians at the time.
