Enoch is a Biblical figure first mentioned in the genealogy section of Genesis chapter five. He was a seventh generation descendant of Adam and the grandfather of Noah. His father was named Jared and one of his sons, Methuselah, is reported in the Bible to have lived for nine hundred sixty-nine years.http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+5&version=NIV The Hebrew name, Enoch, means “dedicated” or “disciplined”.http://www.christianityoasis.com/Keyword/BibleNames.htm#C-O-O-L_BIBLE_NAMES_AND_MEANING Although there are only a total of five verses dedicated to Enoch in the Old Testament, his life was commented on further in both the New Testament and the Qur'an where he is referred to in the Arabic form of his name, Idris. During the second century B.C a book ,entitled The Book of Enoch surfaced. The actual author is lost in antiquity but it is written from the point of view of Enoch, himself. It speaks on the pre-flood condition of humanity and Enoch's ascent into heaven. This book is considered apocrypha by most Jewish and Christian scholars but a small portion of it is quoted in the Bible book of Jude.
Enoch is considered an important, righteous figure in all three of the Abrahamic Faiths. The Bible book of Genesis reports that Enoch “walked with God” for three hundred years at which point “God took him” into heaven. Christians see the life and eventual destination of Enoch as a possible precursor to the Rapture. Some Jewish Rabbis teach that Enoch was called to heaven to lead the angels. Islam adds that while on earth Enoch (Idris) was an important inventor and scientist.
(Note) This Enoch is not to be confused with the Enoch in Genesis 4:17-18, the son of Cain after whom a city was named.http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Genesis+4&version=NIV
