The bulldog originated in the British Isles where it was used for bull baiting, hence the name "bull" dog. The bulldog became more of a companion breed after 1835 when bull baiting and the sport of dog fighting became illegal.
Background
- In the United States the bulldog is referred to as an English bulldog.
- The bulldog was originally bred strong and agile, but very low to the ground so that they could crouch away from the bulls horns while bull baiting.
- Like a snapping turtle, once a bulldog's jaws are closed or locked they remain this way for quite some time, even if they are knocked out.
