English Bulldog

The bulldog originated in the British Isles where it was used for bull baiting, hence the name "bull" dog. The bulldog became more of a companion breed after 1835 when bull baiting and the sport of dog fighting became illegal.

Background

  1. In the United States the bulldog is referred to as an English bulldog.
  2. The bulldog was originally bred strong and agile, but very low to the ground so that they could crouch away from the bulls horns while bull baiting.
  3. Like a snapping turtle, once a bulldog's jaws are closed or locked they remain this way for quite some time, even if they are knocked out.
