History of the Ring
The idea of an engagement ring was first introduced by Pope Innocent III in 1215 because he believed that there should be a waiting period between courting and marriage. At one time the ring was a set of stones that incorporated birthstones of the families that were being united. The ring evolved in Victorian times and became a symbol that required precious gems only. Soon the diamond entered the picture, due to its strong natural state, and was considered a stone that would ward off evil and attract good fortune. Unfortunately, it didn't hit popularity until the mid 20th century when jewelers such as De Beers promoted advertising campaigns with such famous slogans as "A Diamond is Forever".
The Tiffany Mount
Tiffany & Co. is a jewelry store known for its high-end jewelry and diamonds. It's special setting, known as the Tiffany Mount, is a type of claw that attaches to a plain band and holds the stone. It's one of the most common engagement ring settings and is easiest to re-set. The mount is able to show off the diamond in a simplistic way and has extremely firm prongs to keep the stone in place.
