There are a variety of multiplayer modes in Empire Total War including traditional one-on-one individual battles and a brand new campaign multiplayer feature that will be released in Beta form after the game ships.
Multiplayer Details
The developers of Empire Total War are attempting to deliver the most robust multiplayer experience ever included in a real-time strategy game. The game's release date was even pushed in order to give the development team more time to set up the infrastructure for what will be a massive multiplayer campaign mode. This mode will enter a Beta phase after the game's release.
The developers have said there will be a variety of modes that will take advantage of Steam's existing technology to provide players with appropriate matches based on skill level. The multiplayer battles will also be highly customizable so that each player can set up a multiplayer experience to suit their tastes. Players will be able to customize number of turns, turn length, and other victory conditions, such as regions captured or enemies defeated.
The campaign multiplayer mode will be set up so that players can save and leave their games to pick up later, possibly doing battle with multiple other players throughout the entire campaign. Active play in the campaign multiplayer is limited to one player verus another, though.IGN: Q&A Empire Total War's multiplayer modes
