Mahalo travel expert Asha K. gives you a breakdown of what you will need to know before you visit the Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park in New York City.
Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park
Located at the base of the Brooklyn Bridge along the East River, Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park is one of the most popular places in all of New York City to take photos of lower Manhattan since it first opened in 1978.
Today, the park encompasses 9-acres of grassland and an expansive wooden boardwalk, built in 2002 to replace old piers that once stood there.
Tall trees as well as the Brooklyn Bridge provide shaded areas for visitors.
There are two old warehouses in the park - the four-story Empire Stores warehouse that once held coffee and the Tobacco Warehouse - that are used for weddings, corporate functions and parties, though they are open to the public when not in use.
Two rusty moorings salvaged from the site before it was converted sit in front of the Empire Stores warehouse and are fascinating not just for their substantial size but as historical pieces harkening back to Brooklyn’s heyday as a seaport.c

The recreational waterfront area that is Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park will be extended as part of Brooklyn Bridge Park to the north and south. While Brooklyn Bridge Park continues its construction, sections of it are being opened as they are completed; its first section, Pier 1, was opened to the public on March 22, 2010.
Among the amenities to come are a ferry dock, playgrounds and a "water laboratory" for children.
