History and Culture of Emory University
Emory University was born when the Methodist Episcopal Church formed Emory College in 1836 in a small Georgia town named after Oxford University. Emory College was named after a bishop who envisioned an American college "that molded character as well as the mind." It took the college many decades to start to prosper. Plans to grow the college into a university was formalized in 1914.
The following year, the founder of Coca-Cola and a brother of an Emory alumnus and former president Bishop Warren Candler, Asa Candler donated "seed money" and land to build Emory University in its present location. Bishop Candlers became the first chancellor on the new location. Because of Coca-Cola's contributions to the school, Coca-Cola is the de facto official soda of the university.
The official spirit of Emory is said to rest on Dooley, a biology lab skeleton, so the question "Who is Dooley" can be heard on campus. There is a tradition of secret societies at Emory. According to the university itself, membership seems to be awarded to those who are likely to contribute something to campus life.http://www.emory.edu/home/about/history/index.html
