A wave of anti-emo emotion has swept across Mexico resulting in a string of attacks on teenagers who are associated with the music and fashion trend. The largely youth trend originated in the United States in the mid-1990's but entered Mexican culture nearly a decade ago. The look being targeted in Mexico is usually tight fitting jeans on both boys and girls, long, straight hair with long bangs brushed to one side, tight fitting t-shirts, studded belts and canvas or skate-boarding sneakers. Many cite the scathing criticisms of Mexican TV personality Kristoff for inciting the waves of attacks. Kristoff later retracted his statement and condemned the attacks.
