Emmitt Smith was the former running back for the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, and is considered one of the greatest running backs of his time. In 2007, Smith signed a two-year contract to provide commentary for ESPN. On August 7, 2010, Smith was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame along with six other former players. During his acceptance speech, Smith became emotional when talking about the relationship he built with his fellow Dallas Cowboy teammates. He particularly teared up when referencing his father, Emmett Smith II, who was never able to pursue his own football career. Instead, he encouraged and supported his son to do so.
