Emily the Strange is a comic book based on the pop-culture icon Emily Strange, who was created by Rob Reger in the early 1990s. Emily is a thirteen year old girl in black clothes and white mary janes, who can usually be found with a posse of four black cats. She is known for her dark wit, fierce independence, and anti-slogans such as, "Emily didn't search to belong, she searched to be lost." In addition to the comic book series, Emily also has her own line of merchandise and will be featured in an upcoming Twentieth Century Fox film.
Emily the Strange made her first appearance on stickers that were distributed at record stores, skate board shops and concerts. This was in efforts to promote a clothing line that Rob Reger, Matt Reed and Nathan Carrico founded. Nathan Carrico designed Emily the Strange for Santa Cruz Skateboards during 1991 in California.
Now Emily the Strange has made it to everything from novelties, such as key chains and air fresheners, to t-shirts and dresses. This little girl really became popular more so when Avril Lavigne appeared as a judge on American Idol 9 auditions wearing a cat hear hoodie. This was a featured item at the Emily Strange website. Hot Topic carries a wide variety of Emily the Strange products as well as her official website.
