Unitarian minister Charles Wesley Emerson's study of oratory under Professor Lewis B. Monroe led to Emerson founding the Boston Conservatory of Elocution and Oratory in 1880. The school was re-named several times as its scope expanded to include creative writing, journalism, theater and broadcast media.
