Ellis Park Stadium is among the ten venues of the 2010 World Cup, which is to be held in South Africa in June and July. There will be five group stage matches at Ellis Park: Argentina versus Nigeria on June 12; Brazil against North Korea on June 15; Slovenia versus United States on June 28; Honduras versus Spain on June 21; and Slovakia squaring off against Italy on June 24. The stadiums is among the most famous and historically significant in South Africa. It was built in 1928 and was later renovated in 1982, and has hosted scores of memorable sporting events over the course of its eight decadeds of existence, among them South Africa's 1995 victory in the World Cup of Rugby, which was celebrated in the film Invictus. While the original cost of the stadium is not known, the renovations cost $63 million, and the stadium presently seats in excess of 62,000 fans. For much of its existence, Ellis Park was used only for rugby, but it was given an upgrade before the 2009 Confederations Cup.
